What's in My Sketchbook: Bird Gone Wrong

I know we've been showing more recent doodles in our "What's in Our Sketchbook" series, but I was organizing old docs and came across my very old childhood sketchbook recently. There are many more to this but I got tired taking photos... I was about six or seven and remember that I got fixated on the notion of getting this bird right but whenever I got to the wing, or the tail, or the grass..something would go horribly wrong and the whole watercolor would have to be destroyed (notice swirly watercolor slashes and swirls). I'm sure my family thought I went mad because I sequestered myself in the dining room for hours that night and would get up only to fill my water cup and mutter to myself. Guess you could say I was a pretty frustrated artist back then!

Ok, so what's in your sketchbook? Lately or all the way back when? Please share with us!

Our Projects: What's in My Sketchbook

Thought I'd switch it up for Monday and show you what's in the sketchbook of talented Designing Mom Aya and her work with a few creative titles from Chronicle Books. Our bambinos share a wonderful nanny together and I look forward to them being partners in crime (or...hopefully design!) together. I also look forward to seeing more of Aya's future Chronicle releases!
*On that note: keep reading because I will have a great party book from Chronicle to give away right after this post...

from Designing Mom Aya: (above) My sketches when I was illustrating patterns for a product called CD packaging kit. The kit comes with 25 stickers to decorate CDs and I draw 5 patterns with a nature inspired theme which I called it Candy Orchard :) Cd2 is the front of the finished kit box.

above: My sketch for a layout of book called The Pillow Book. It’s a how-to book on sewing DIY decorative pillows. As you can see, I wanted to have some kind of ornamental frame to hold text on the right hand page. I tried a few different things, but in the end, I actually stitched a frame on a fabric and used its scan. This was fun.

above: My sketch that I sent to a photographer, Leigh Beisch, to show the kind of photograph that I wanted for a chapter opener of a cookbook called Sticky Chewy Messy Gooey. The second photo is the final sticky-chewy-goodness that Leigh captured for me. Yum! Leigh is a local photographer, and while she doesn’t “design” she is a creative mom of a super adorable little girl :)

Decorate: Our Holiday Decor

Just wanted to post up some photos of last year's holiday decor from a few of the Designing Moms. With that said, I know that all of you have your current holiday loot up and humming by now... I'll be posting some current decor in the next few days and we'd love for some of you out there to share with us. Let's get into the holiday spirit together--snap a photo and email it to me at DesigningMoms@gmail.com!

Designing Mom Contributor Dana: (above) "It's nothing big...but it's something i do to dress up my interior doors (a whopping three!)...I just took small wreaths and wired ribbon...looped the ribbon around the wreath and then made a bow and hung them from a nail on my doors. It's simple and it makes the hallway to look festive."

Our Projects: What's in My Sketchbook

by Designing Mom Tori

I love sketchbooks. I love the imperfections, the layers, the smudges, the quick ideas represented, and all of the little details. Little did I know that I would build up such a collection over the years. I can look back on certain sketches and vividly remember particular times in my life.

My future grandchildren may not have many old journals of mine to read through, but they will definitely have a few (very imperfect) sketchbooks. I thought I would share a few sketches for my greeting card designs. I love to do several rough sketches until I get one that I like and then I scan it in and tweak it in Illustrator. When I first started my business I was much more comfortable with drawing by hand than I was with a computer so I have a lot more of my "early work" in sketchbook form. Now that illustrator is just another medium for me, I often create my card designs from scratch on the computer. I still start many of my designs by hand and scan them in though - to give it a certain feel that I just can't get with a computer program.

Our Projects: What's in My Bag

by Designing Mom Guissell

I should explain that I have never been a fan of diaper bags because they often look like a big diaper with handle! I may be alone in this but that's just how I feel about them. With that being said these are my two "everyday" bags I interchange with. My mommy bag (which I guess would be considered diaper bag) is my beloved Doors canvas bag I got from Target. My Beatles "singles" bag is the one I use when I'm running solo. After taking this pic I realized I missed one item in the contents picture which is my trusty journal... Why you ask? Well because I was writing on it when I remembered I had to take this picture! Oh but the joy of motherhood....

"Mommy Bag"
1. A set of change of clothes for my little man plus his shades because if I have shades then he has to have shades... you know how that goes.
2. Wipes... I don't think I need to explain this one.
3. Books... These just happen to be his favorite now.
4. The unstoppable duo of Woody & Buzz Lightyear!
5. Juice box... I don't use them all the time but I like to have them just in case.
6. Snack... Small finger food can be a melt down savior sometimes.

The items withing the {} are contents that I need at all times and must shift between bags.
7. Shades... A NYer must!
8. Wallet... Business cards reside in here as well.
9. Cellphone... ok I hate cellphones and if you would talk to anyone I know they would tell you how they hate I own one. If it's not dying, it's dead. Needless to say I often hear "why do you own a cellphone again?"...
10. Hair tie... Must must must! I use the No Damage by Scunci in black.

"Singles Bag"
11. Magazine... This one is the one I am reading now but it varies with decor mags.
12. SUDOKU!!!... enough said.
13. MP3 player... MUST MUST MUST! But it only resides in this bag. I find it rude when I see parents with their headsets on and walking with their kids.
14. Reading glasses...
15. Pen... To do my Sudoku of course! Funny how I don't carry one in my mommy bag. Sorry I only got one extra hand and it's not going to be used for writing.
16. Tissues... Because I need break from the wipes!
17. Trusty Journal... I couldn't leave it out of my list. It's a leather bound Banana Republic one I got 10years ago. I have the bad habit of collecting journals.

I should add that when I am working outside of home my "singles" bag is replaced with a business bag and a make-up bag is thrown in the mix...

Our Projects: What's in My Sketchbook

We're continuing with our ongoing series of sharing what's in our sketchbooks...

From sweets to spooky creatures...I'm not one bit surprised to see that the initial pencil sketches from Designing Moms Pamela, Amy and Betsy of February 13 Creative are as playful and jubilant as the finished design!

Our Projects: What's in My Sketchbook

If we're not emptying the contents of our bags for all to see, then we're peeking into each other's sketchbooks. But that's what I love about the Designing Mom group projects...it's share and share alike! Continuing today with our series of behind-the-scenes-sketchbooks is "Make" contributor Dana. I think her sketches for her Plumtree Studio tees are just as whimsical as the finished products themselves!

Our Projects: What's in My Sketchbook...

I thought it'd be fun to start a new group project and call on the Designing Moms to let us see some of the sketches behind their ideas and products. Today's inspiration comes from Guissell. This is an ongoing series so if any of you out there have sketches of your own please send them on over to share!

I almost never doodle designs mainly because I am far more comfortable doing so directly onto
Illustrator. As a matter of fact, this is actually the only sketch that is found in my trusty notebook. I doodled this whilst standing in a subway cart on my way back to Queens to pick up my son. I had been thinking about doing something to benefit charity:water and the image came to mind right then and there... I ended up naming this Give & Care Collection dedicated to charity:water and their outstanding work.

What's in My Bag: Liberty

By Designing Mom Liberty

My kids are finally out of diapers, which means that though I still carry an extra load of clothing for everyone in my overloaded minivan, my bags these days, look a little more sophisticated. This is my latest bag - one I picked up in the San Lorenzo Market when my hubby took me to Florence this summer. It is my favorite souvenir from the trip, in my very favorite color. (It's also quite grown up feeling, compared to the last 5 years of diaper bags!) What's in my bag?
1 - my lovely yellow wallet. I bought it brand new from my across the street neighbor at her garage sale. We were out shopping once and she said, "I have a wallet just like that!" before realizing it was hers. It's big, fabulous, and my daughter's favorite color.
2 - my (also grown up) prescription sunglasses. I finally turned away from my cheapo glamour glasses that I was always losing and sitting on... and before my vacation this summer got some good prescription sunglasses, which must mean I am old for sure.
3 - my
business card case - bought on Etsy from JMorrow, complete with my business cards
4 - my
iPhone. I blog from it, I take photos, it's hard for me to even take the trash out without it. It's an addiction (cute leather brocade snap-on case that you can't see from Ultra Case.) While I'm at it, I'll mention that my favorite mommy app is the CameraBag app which makes regular iPhone pictures look fabulous.
5 - my
journal. I made it. It's from reused board and fabrics, and has hand-carved (by me) stamp designs throughout the pages. I'm always writing or sketching something... i feel lost without paper on hand.
6 - two things here... the one is my second "key ring" that I use to keep all of those grocery store discount cards, etc, so they don't clutter my already cluttered key ring and the second is my cute little makeup bag that my friend, Amy sent me from
Thailand. I love it
7 - my little baggie of "unmentionables"

8 - gum (which I now have to carry in two different flavors for my 2 different kids)

9 - toy cars - never leave home without them
10 - rubber bands - between myself and my daughter, there's always a need

11 - a small sampling of my pen addiction. This is not ALL of the pens I carry around. Usually I also have a Sharpie on hand - often in brown, my favorite color for pens.
12 -
lip gloss, mascara, nail clipper... just the basics. I don't primp a lot, but my days are long and if I can get a minute to freshen up, I really should be prepared. The one thing that I forgot to include here is an image of my keys! I swear that every mom needs a key fob and my favorites are found on etsy - try here. I keep a bunch on hand.
